In New Zealand, a pioneering show home is redefining sustainable construction. Designed by TAWA Architecture and built by Higgs Building Company, this project prioritises energy efficiency, comfort, and innovation. It incorporates state-of-the-art materials such as Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs) for the walls, a MaxRaft insulated floor system, and advanced thermally broken joinery with APL’s Centrafix technology. The result is a home that surpasses standard building regulations, creating a healthier and more sustainable living environment.

STIEBEL ELTRON’s highly efficient mechanical ventilation system plays a key role in the performance of this home. The system ensures continuous airflow throughout the building, removing stale air and delivering fresh, filtered air. By recovering up to 90% of the heat from outgoing air, it minimises energy loss and helps maintain a consistent indoor temperature of 20°C year-round. Additionally, the ventilation significantly reduces allergens and controls humidity levels, preventing condensation and mould, making it an ideal solution for modern, energy-conscious homes.

Energy modelling through the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) software confirms that the home uses approximately 70% less energy than a typical New Zealand dwelling, showcasing the effectiveness of its design. As the project moves towards Passive House certification, it highlights the potential of sustainable construction to deliver exceptional thermal comfort alongside substantial energy savings.

This home has developed in partnership between TAWA Architecture and Higgs Building company, creating a new company EBODE High-Performance SIP Homes, specialising in durable, energy-efficient homes that emphasise sustainability. Together with the innovative designs from TAWA Architecture and the construction expertise of Higgs Building Company, the team has achieved a remarkable balance between functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal. Making Hi-performance SIP homes more available to their customers with house and land packages through-out the Waikato.

The inclusion of STIEBEL ELTRON’s advanced ventilation system enhances the home’s performance, ensuring that the indoor environment is not only energy efficient but also healthier and more comfortable for its occupants. This project is an inspiring example of how innovative technologies and sustainable practices can transform the future of housing in New Zealand.
