Carlaw Park

Carlaw Park, the University of Auckland Student Accommodation, is an impressive 10-story building that accommodates more than 200 apartments with 903 bedrooms and related communal services. The building's shape occupies the site along its four boundaries, maximising the efficiency of the site and reducing negative or wasted space. The location and function of the building encouraged a mixed-use response, where the ground floor features retail spaces.

The design also features a 'hollow core' within the building that creates a central courtyard, vital in providing living and bedroom outlooks, privacy, and a relaxed, sheltered landscape for students to enjoy. The building is located in 'The Mixed-Use Zone' under the Auckland Council Unitary Plan, which permits a greater intensity of development. The building's design features articulate the scale and proportions of the building at the interface with the public, creating the resemblance of a series of distinctly formulated building shapes. The building mass is further undone with areas of recessed roof lines and facades, which are further expressed through changes in materials and colours. The large areas of glazing on the ground level ensure visual transparency and encourage visual connections at the street level and into the central courtyard of the student accommodation building.

The project involved installing 203 STIEBEL ELTRON DHE electric instant water heaters in a student accommodation building. These water heaters are energy-efficient and designed to be highly efficient, providing hot water only when needed. This reduces energy usage and lowers utility bills. The compact design of the water heaters is ideal for use in small spaces such as apartments or dorm rooms. Additionally, the water heaters feature precise temperature control, allowing users to adjust the water temperature to their liking. DHE water heaters are easy to install, making them an excellent choice for new construction or retrofit projects.
